About Nkeiru Okoye

The Louisville Orchestra is thrilled to welcome Nkeiru Okoye as part of the 2023-24 Creators Corps! Hailed as “gripping” and “evocative” by the New York Times, Okoye creates a body of work that welcomes and affirms both traditional and new audiences. Andrea Blain and Scott Blankenship, writing for Your Classical Music, Minnesota Public Radio, wrote, “Composer Nkeiru Okoye doesn’t fit neatly into any kind of classical category. Her compositions showcase her genius by incorporating different types of musical styles that help create a sound that’s uniquely hers.”

Okoye’s works have been commissioned, performed, and presented by the Detroit Symphony, Philadelphia Orchestra, Baltimore Symphony, Opera North UK, Mt. Holyoke College, Juilliard School, Houston Grand Opera, the American Opera Project, and many others.

Projects & Events at the Louisville Orchestra

Projects:

Cookies, Cocktails, and the Composer is a series of hourlong events in collaboration with African-American-owned restaurants and bars in Louisville, featuring chamber music by black composers, presentations facilitated by Dr. Okoye, and of course, custom drinks and desserts! Between the cookies and cocktails, and community-friendly spaces, a good time will be had by all.
