Teddy Abrams explains about his concert program, “Our Sacred and Profane: Of Heavens and Humans concerts explore a broad range of musical approaches to describing and channeling both the most elated spiritual experiences of the species and our most visceral, grounded, and mortal conditions. Some of this music is designed to give humanity a glimpse of heaven and the immortal, while other music on this program serves to bind the species in our shared path as we contemplate our uncertain place in the universe.”

FEATURED PERFORMERS and MUSIC

JUBILANT SYKES, baritone, is the highlight of the concert as he performs American spirituals with the orchestra. Gorgeous and uplifting, the selections include: “City Called Heaven,” “Ride on King Jesus,” “Sometimes I Feel Like A Motherless Child” and others. Sykes was most recently seen in his performance as the lead (the Celebrant) in the 2015 LO production of MASS.

These concerts features The Creation of the World by French composer Darius Milhaud. Deeply influenced by the jazz he heard on a trip to New York City, Milhaud created ballet music that combined the exotic, the popular and the traditional in this six movement work.

LO Concertmaster  Gabriel Lefkowitz performs a solo violin sonata in the Rosary Sonata No. 9, titled “Jesus Carries the Cross.” Written in 1676, the set of sonatas includes 15 different works and most of them use a rare a fascinating technique called “scordatura” — a re-tuning of the strings on the violin to give the instrument a different tonal color than the normally brilliant violin sound.

LED ZEPPELIN PREMIERE PIECE

Achilles Last Stand by Jimmy Page and Robert Plant is a rock-n-roll standard played at every Led Zeppelin concert since 1977.  Written when Plant had an ankle injury (reference to “Achilles”), the lyrics center on Atlas, the holder of the heavens above the earth in mythology.

CONCERT TALK

Starting one hour before each of these concerts, the LO presents a preview of the performance with in-depth information and insights. Friday morning’s Concert Talk is held in Whitney Hall. Saturday’s Concert Talk is held in the Mary Anderson Room. Free to all ticket-holders.
