CLASSICS: BRAHMS THIRD

Saturday, February 1, 2020 8:00pm

Event Description

01 FEB 2020 :: No less a pianist than the virtuoso Franz Liszt told Edvard Grieg “You carry on, my friend; you have the real stuff in you. And don’t ever let them frighten you!” upon previewing the younger man’s first (and only) piano concerto. This splendid masterpiece, with its sincere melodies and warm sonorities, has offered vigorous poetry to listeners ever since. We welcome UofL faculty member and international touring and recording artist, Anna Petrova as piano soloist.

Composer James Lee III is recognized for his highly complex and tonal music. We are honored to premiere his new composition Emotive Transformations.

Winner of the 2018 Sir George Solti Conducting Award and now earning international acclaim, Roderick Cox takes the podium for the rich, mysterious, and bold virtuosity of the Third Symphony of Brahms.

CONCERT TALK: Starting at 6:45PM in Whitney Hall, the LO, together with WUOL, offers a free, pre-concert discussion hosted by radio program direction Daniel Gilliam.
