“Abrams Conducts Stravinsky” is a tribute to the music of this master composer (beyond the famous ballets), and is the second in our online concerts. Watch live or watch later on-demand when you purchase the Louisville Orchestra Virtual Edition.

This concert is also available as a single event. Details and purchase links will be released soon.

Igor Stravinsky (1882-1971) came to the United States in 1939 and lived the rest of his life here. Starting in the 1920s, he began exploring the structures and aesthetics of music from the 18th century, now described as his “neoclassical” period. Though misunderstood by his contemporaries, Stravinsky was serious about his attempts to reinterpret the past in terms of the present. He was following this musical path when he joined other ex-patriots in Hollywood, California, using the forms, chords, and straightforward melodic contours of an earlier time to support his personal voice. His music turned away from the wild impassioned and extroverted expression of Rite of Spring, Firebird, and Petrouchka of his early years and became restrained, pure, sophisticated, and classical.
