Pusateri's stint saved orchestra

ANDREW ADLER Joseph Pusateri closed out his three years as board president of the Louisville Orchestra late last month, and the occasion — accompanied, literally, by a brass band — was a reminder of just how utterly unconventional a leader he was.

Could anyone else remind the board that, when he took one of the toughest jobs on the local arts scene, he didn't like classical music — and end his tenure by declaring, "I still don't"? It was pure, typical Joe P, the homebuilder who put up his money and, well, chutzpah, to rescue an institution on the brink of collapse. (continue article)

 

Orchestra's new board chief balances passion, pragmatism

Tom Noland is fully aware of the challenges he faces leading the Louisville Orchestra's board of directors.


Though he officially became president just weeks ago -- taking over from Joseph Pusateri -- Noland has been at the epicenter of orchestra activities for much of the past four years. As head of the committee charged with finding a new music director, he helped persuade Jorge Mester to return to the podium Mester had occupied three decades earlier. And by guiding the committee process that brought almost a dozen candidates to town over two seasons, he carried more potential leverage than any other board member.

A tall, black-bearded fellow who suggests an intriguing amalgam of Stonewall Jackson and Ivy League professor, Noland is a compelling conversationalist. He spins out a phrase or two with a rich confidence that occasionally sounds a bit rehearsed -- appropriate, perhaps, for someone who rose through the ranks of Humana Inc. to become the company's senior vice president for corporate communications.
